New Work Network (NWN) and Artquest are pleased to present the fourth film of the ‘Mixing It Up: An Intergenerational Perspective’ series: a dialogue between the two artists Barby Asante and Sonia Boyce, filmed by Fiona Melville.

Barby Asante is an Artist, Curator and Educator based in South London. She studied Fine Art at the University of East London, where she began making work in film, photography and installation, placing herself in the frame as a means of confronting the audience with the perceived problem of her image. Asante is interested in creating works that stimulate dialogue around the cross-cultural and multicultural and how we view and frame these questions in contemporary Britain, often using familiar or popular culture triggers as a means to begin the dialogue. Recently Asante has been working on projects exploring music and its cultural and social significance, with particular emphasis on black music and it’s importance in the creation of a post-war British cultural identity.

Sonia Boyce came to prominence in the early 1980s as a key figure in the burgeoning black British art-scene of that time – becoming one of the youngest artists of her generation to have her work purchased by the Tate Gallery, with paintings that spoke about racial identity and gender in Britain. Since the 1990s Boyce’s practice has taken a more multi-media and improvisational approach by bringing people together to speak or sing about the past and the present. Since 1983, Boyce has exhibited extensively throughout the UK and internationally and has completed an AHRC Research Fellowship at Wimbledon College of Art and Design, University of the Arts London with her concluding research project the Future is Social.

Jess Baines presented the politically motivated printshop collectives that proliferated in the UK in the 1970s and 80s. These were not ‘printmaking’ workshops for ‘limited editions’ but places to cheaply produce alternative critical media. Founded by anarchists, artists, lefties and feminists, Jess will focus on the printshops’ connection with the changing politics of women’s liberation.

David Curtis and Biddy Peppin were involved in both London Arts Laboratories – innovative multi-artform spaces that contributed to the artistic explosion of the 1960s. Both Arts Labs experimented, in different ways, with artist-led collective organisation. The Drury Lane Arts Lab (1967-9) was founded and led by Jim Haynes. The Robert Street Arts Lab (known as IRAT – the Institute for Research into Art and Technology) (1969-71) was formed by a breakaway group , and attempted a more democratic structure. Both pursued the vision of a relationship between artists and the public that was unsullied by the art market. Neither received public funding; instead, as membership clubs, they depended on income from subscriptions and ticket sales from the programmes. At both sites David ran the film programmes and Biddy co-curated the exhibition spaces. They will discuss London Arts Labs’ artistic, social and organisational successes and failures, and the ideas inspiring them.

WHEN: Saturday 28th April 2012, 10:30-16:30

WHERE: ]performance s p a c e [ , 6 Hamlet Industrial Estate, White Post Lane, London E9 5EN

COST: £10 / £8 (NWN Members) to book click here (tea / coffee / biscuits provided)

David Bohm was a world-renowned physicist and philosopher who, late in his career, dedicated himself to the development of a theory on Dialogue employing collective and creative thought as a suggested method by which to combat societal fracturing. His approach involved participants working together to understand the assumptions underlying their individual and collective beliefs. It is regularly employed in a series of situations including conflict resolution and penal contexts.

Facilitated by Hester Reeve, participants will be introduced to the unique possibilities that Bohmian Dialogue offers in terms of reconsidering our relationship to thought, creativity and its processes as well as having the opportunity to explore the process of ‘thinking together’ with no predefined purpose or agenda.

‘Dialogue is a way of observing, collectively, how hidden values and intentions can control our behaviour. It can be seen as an arena in which collective learning takes place and out of which a sense of increased harmony, fellowship and creativity can arise.’

‘I was interested in the meta-narrative; the dynamic of the group; and my own role in it. It was illuminating.’ Sue Ball
